What is the best book or starter kit for a beginner with Model Trains? One of my best friends mentioned years ago that his dad did model trains and had a big model train table before his dad passed away. He mentioned that he wanted to make something similar to it when he gets older, in part because it’s one of the few memories he has of his father. I’ve only recently remembered this conversation and I thought a starter kit or an informative book for beginners might be good for him as a birthday or Christmas present. Does anyone know anything about this hobby that might be able to make some good suggestions?
Does anyone know where my hubby can buy wholesale model trains? My hubby wants to start a business selling model trains, he textures too and would like to set up but needs suppliers of the trains at very low cost. Thanks you guys. He's tried ebay, and the manufacturors won't deal with you unless you are already an registered business, which I can understand. Thanks for your answers.
Is there a standard size for model trains? Sine I was a child I wanted to collect model trains. Recently my gf bought me a model train for my bday. I have seen different sizes in the hobby shops and I was wondering if there is a "popular" size. I do not care for the large ones (no offense to those who do) and I do not want "tiny" trains... Is "NH" a common size? My intention is to build one of the monumentous train "towns" you see in exhibits. I do not want to spend years collecting sizes that may difficult to keep up with. Thank you to all of you for answerting. This has reeeeeealllly been helpful. YES, it is worth 10
Are the Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Lionel Trains the same size as N-Gauge model trains? Every Christmas for a long time now, I have been getting my father the Hallmark Keepsake Lionel Train ornaments. He loves trains and especially these ornaments. I was wondering if these ornaments were the same size as the N-Gauge model trains because I want to see if I can put these trains on N-Gauge track. If I could do this, I want to get my a track to put these trains. Any input would be great!
Model Trains- What Does the "Code Mean?" (Code 100, Code 83)? Hi. I'm looking into starting model train building, and I have been looking at tracks. I'm being given an option of "Code 100" and "Code 83." What does this mean exactly? I looked at a picture and it seemed that the rail sizes were different. Is there a particular "code" that you reccommend I get? Are different codes compatible with eachother? Thanks a lot!
How do model trains work? I'm working on designing a lift system for elderly or handicapped people, and I'd like to use the same concepts as the train to help move the patient. Any help would be great.

Model trains: How to convert analog 4-4-0 Southern Pacific loco to DCC?? Hi everyone, I have an HO scale analog 4-4-0 Southern Pacific locomotive that I would like to convert to DCC. I understand the basic electronics required for an encoder car behind the engine, but I keep hearing horror stories about people who build the encoder "by the book" but then have major vibration problems with the engine running at slow speeds or stopped. Has anyone out there come up with a good way to build an encoder that reduces or eliminates engine vibration? Thanks to all for taking the time to read this. Have a good day !!! Big Al Mintaka
Question about model trains? I'm becoming interested in model trains as of late. I'm wondering if anyone knows what I should use to create model buildings because I feel that it would probably more fun if I were to build the settings myself. So if anyone knows, what material should I use to make a realistic looking building or what specific reference should I use to find out?
Where can I find a complete model train set? It's for a gift for an older man, who used to collect trains. I know nothing about model trains, but instead of asking him, I wanted to make it a complete surprise. Can anyone help me find something that's complete, so I don't have to do crazy figuring what goes with what? I'm willing to spend a few hundred dollars, or slightly more. Could this get me something decent quality??? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have three questions regarding model trains. DCC, Track, Coupler conversion.? I have just recently gotten back into model trains. I guess I have some leisure time on my hands working here in China and have set up a layout which is a work in progress. My first question is regarding track and how to determine size that a curve will take up. I know from the track I have which is standard but I need a tighter curve and wonder how to accomplish this. I have read there is flexible track but I am in China and do not know where to obtain it. I also think if I had the shorter curve track that might solve my problem. My second question is regarding the new style trains and the mentioning of DCC which I know about but have not concerned myself with getting into. The question is: Will a DCC train work on a standard transformer run track? I assume it will but not sure. My third question is: I have some older trains with the old style couplers in HO gauge. Is there a conversion to the new style? Thanks for you help. Any other help is welcome. Ted My trains are HO Scale. I have an outside track which is a standard curve. I wish to run a track inside that with a tighter curve. I know they make shorter curve track and I suppose this will enable me to do this. I just don't know the distance from one side of the curve to the other. Going to a hobby shop is not possible since there are none here in China that I have found. I just want to know the distance from the beginning of one side of the curve across to the other side of the curve. I can get the track but am building the layout and want to make sure I make the upper portion big enough to accept the curve. The DCC is digital control and I do not have that. I want to buy an engine that says it is DCC ready and want to run it with a conventional transformer. Is there a compatibility problem doing that? Later I can do the DCC but for now just want to run the trains the old fashioned way. How about coupler conversion to the new style. Wnat to convert to new style.

Christmas gift for a model train fanatic? My ex's father is one of those people that have every model train accessory possible. I'm going to try to be a good guy this Christmas and get each of the family something nice (the mother likes to drink, so easy present (wine, vodka - that is the question). However if I buy a present for one of the family sides, I think it would only be fair to by a cheap gift for both sides. This should be around the $10 mark, no more. Any ideas?
steam locomotives only model train layout? If you were to build a model train layout, would it be steam only?I personally don't care for diesel locomotives. They don't have all the neat sounds a steamer has.All you hear is a steady drone of a diesel engine.Steam, they have all kinds of chuffs, chugs.I love the sound of a steamer taking off.It starts slow, then as it builds steam,it gets faster.I love steamers, and my layout will only have steam engines. That's the way railroads started, and that's the way they should be.
How do I install a digital decoder in a marklin model locomotive? Marklin in Germany make AC (alternating current) 3 rail model trains. Electronics now play a big part of model railways and these locomotives have and can have tiny PCB's (printed circuit boards) known as decoders installed in them. The AC decoders for marklin do not come with a plug and socket like DC trains, - I would like to know how to A. test a faulty decoder and change a faulty decoder over and B. Install a decoder into a model that does not yet have one. if there is demo I can download that would be perfect?

Sliding vertical wall brackets for model train board? I am building a model train layout and want to fix the base board to the wall at one end with free standing legs at the other. The length of the board is about 5ft which would mean I'd have to fix the bracket about 2ft up from the ground. This is obviously to low so I am looking for brackets that are on a sliding vertical track. I could slide them right down to pack the board away or fold down the board and slide the brackets up to table height to play with the trains. Has anyone seen a bracket that fits the description? Thanks
